Capella University is a private for-profit, online university headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The school is owned by the publicly traded Strategic Education, Inc. and delivers most of its education online.

In 1997, Capella University received regional accreditation.[6] Two years later the parent company and university were renamed Capella Education Company and Capella University, respectively. In 2000, Capella began to offer bachelor's degree programs.[citation needed]

In 2006, the United States Department of Education, Office of the Inspector General (OIG) began a compliance audit of Capella. OIG focused on the university's policies and procedures concerning the return of Title IV funds as required by Federal Law for students who failed to give official notice that they were withdrawing from the school.[15] The OIG found that Capella made accounting mistakes in how it calculated student eligibility for government-subsidized loans, including failing to return all funds disbursed on behalf of students who dropped out before their first day of class.[16] Capella, in a response to the audit, says it recognizes some past shortcomings in its accounting practices and has made changes to ensure that such errors are not repeated.[16]

The plaintiffs say that the for-profit university pours resources into recruiting new students at the expense of current students, leading to decreased resources, high instructor turnover, and delays.

I have been going to to Capella University for a some years now and I am finding it harder to complete my studies there. I have to seek training outside of the university in order to complete my degree In IT for Mobile Applications Development. I have complained to counseling and to all that would listen at this school. I have had to drop this class several times because I could never get any help from the Instructor. I was actually told that I should take one of the bootcamp courses to learn how to develop mobile applications. I have talked to counselors and they said that they will pass along this information but it never goes any further than the telephone. I am a disabled veteran and I need this degree in order to get a job that will get me off of my feet.

The same thing happened to me. I wrote a letter to the President of the University and he passed it to another staff member. The person stated he would speak with the faculty member that made the decision to deny my appeal. I was told no I could not complete my degree because I had an extension and the last reviewer found one thing that needed corrected. I could have corrected the sentence and resubmitted the work. I was told to look for another university that has a abd (all but dissertation) transfer program.I had previously turned my work in and the reviewer requested that I make corrections. I made the corrections and the reviewer past my work to someone else.

Capella University originated in 1993 and was originally called The Graduate School of America. Stephen Shank and Dr. Harold Abel founded the establishment. Both individuals come from a successful professional and educational background. Abel was the acting president of Castleton State College, Walden University, and Central Michigan University. Sank headed up the Tonka Corporation as the CEO. They worked quickly towards accreditation for the university and received this in 1997.

Capella University strives to offer flexible and thorough degree programs for young students, as well as adult, working students. The university prides itself on student body variety. The founders of Capella have taken the time to seek out proper accreditation to make all degrees viable in the workplace. All of this is accomplished with affordability in mind. Pursue the career of your dreams at Capella University today.

When the school began, it was met with skepticism and resistance as many people looked at Mr. Shank as the "old toy guy" who was creating a university. Because it was new, many people did not understand how distance learning would work. Even his partner, Dr. Abel, had mixed feelings about starting the new school. Dr. Abel was ending a 40 year career in higher education and at the age of 72, was not sure how the new university setting would work.

With Mr. Shank's knowledge of business and Dr. Abel's knowledge of education, the two worked together, with a radical and exciting philosophy to create something that didn't exist before. The university began with four people and, in the early years, faculty meetings were held at Dr. Abel's dining room table. The university began with a small family atmosphere. Early in the process, whenever a student signed up for classes, staff would ring a bell to signify a new student. At the ringing of the bell, everyone would stop what they were doing and celebrate the registration.

During the first few years, the school was not accredited and there was no guarantee that accreditation would be forthcoming, yet the university created a learner-centered approach with Mr. Shank's vision of keeping their commitment to the student and delivering what they needed in higher education.

In 1995, Bruce Francis became the president of the university and shortly after taking office, he suggested creating an online course as the internet was growing in popularity. In 1997, the university received accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association. In 2000, the university added undergraduate degrees.

In order to apply to Capella University, prospective students must complete an online application with the help of an admissions expert. Capella will require permission to obtain transcripts from any colleges or universities attended. Bachelor's students must have a high school diploma or equivalent. This may be waived for military applicants, veterans and those with at least 24 quarter credits of prior college or university coursework. Masters students must have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university while students seeking doctorate level degrees must have a master's degree from an accredited college or university. 041b061a72
