Frequently Asked Questions

  • What do i bring to my first class?
Please try to arrive 15 minutes early so that you can meet the staff and instructor, and become orientated with our space. If you have a gi of your own, bring it! If not , No problem a short and tshirt should do just fine! For a no-gi class, a rashguard and shorts should be worn.
  • I do not own a GI, do i have to buy one to do a class?"
Absolutely not! After finishing the fundamentals cycle which consists of 8 classes, you can buy a gi before entering the normal classes.
  • I am above 30 years old, am I too old to start martial arts?"
No, you are not too old to begin martial arts training. FightX regularly has students start from adolecense through their 50's and older.
  • What is the difference between Gi and No-Gi?
In short – and perhaps the most obvious point – the uniform! In Gi Classes, you wear a gi. In No-Gi, you don’t! Gi jiu-jitsu, the uniform is a fundamental piece of most techniques and movements. No-gi jiu-jitsu, on the other hand, more closely resembles wrestling as it is often faster paced and places emphasis on speed rather than leverage. In no-gi classes, you can wear a rash guard and board shorts or leggings. While each style has advantages and disadvantages (technically speaking), they share a remarkably similar conceptual foundation and are absolutely complementary to one another in training jiu-jitsu overall.
  • I am a woman, is BJJ right for me?"
YES! Jiu-Jitsu is an excellent choice for women, especially for how it contributes to one’s self-defensive ability, sense of community and belonging, and of course, mental and physical fitness. Regarding self-defense, it is a fantastic skillset to have (and practice) because, when an “opponent’s” physical size exceeds our own, jiu-jitsu trains us to utilize leverage and specific techniques that work to fill that gap. Outside of self-defense, the jiu-jitsu community is widespread and actively growing; passionate people with a shared passion come together to practice, make mistakes, and learn from one another
  • Is there an age limit for classes?
No! We have members here who range from 5 years old to over 50! We offer both adult and Kids classes. Martial arts is for everyone.
  • Would Jiu Jitsu benefit my child?
Absolutely! Regardless of your child’s coordination/ body awareness/ strength/ size/ etc., they CAN and WILL excel at jiu-jitsu with enough effort and consistency. Training jiu-jitsu is an interactive, engaging, and FUN activity where your child will improve their balance, reflexes, flexibility, and coordination. In addition to the physical benefits, practicing Jiu-Jitsu and its embodiment of traditional martial arts principles will gently endow upon them discipline, resiliency, patience, work ethic, and, most importantly, will boost their self-esteem.
