Then I decided to try using one of my PCI CMI8738-LX cards to force port 388 open. With both CMI8738-LXes running at once, both with OPL3 enabled via PeekPoke (verified with RWEverything as well) and with port 388 open, the only card that would put out FM sound was the PCI CMI8738-LX. The PCI Express one was completely silent. This makes me think there are one of three issues at play here preventing OPL3 from working:

No I haven't, but isn't DOSBox Daum limited to addresses 220 and 388? I'm going to try your driver which uses FM at CMI8738 base address + 0x50 on my Athlon X2-based Acer Aspire since that's the only computer I have on hand where ports 220 and 388 don't work to see if I can get FM out of DOSBox Daum that way (PCI cards only, I no longer have any PCI Express CMI8738s on hand).

I've modified inpout32.dll, from , but i haven't checked it, since my new PC has no CMI8738 card, no PCI ports ? and i already have Arduino OPL3 rig. Please install original driver first(from site). Then at 42400h in modified inpout32.dll write your FM address in DWORD little endian form. Also you have to install Visual Studio 2015 redistributle.

EXTRA EDIT: Forgot to mention I'm using this driver. Does it enable the entirety of the legacy audio block or just the FM block? I remember having no sound with X-Wing using the patched ADLIB_W.IMS driver found on this site when just the FM block is enabled. Perhaps I should revert to this driver instead?

It was made prior to you joining the forum, so I don't expect you to know about this. This includes a modified ADLIB_W.IMS for the floppy disk edition of Star Wars X-Wing which corrects timing errors and also accesses FM hardware via port 220 instead of the typical port 388. With your modified inpout32.dll and the drivers that access the CMI8738's FM hardware at base + 0x50, I get no sound with this driver.

Sound card drivers are a kind of software, and therefore they are subject to all the same problems that affect the work of other kindsof programs. Keep in mind that sound card drivers may also be damaged for various reasons, such as virus-infected,or obsolete as a result of system upgrades or software changes.

Remember that is very important to have exactly the driver that is needed specifically for your hardware sound card model. Therefore, it is recommended that you search using the sound card manufacturer name and model number of each sound card.

Expand the audio capabilities of your computer with internal and external sound cards. Internal options connect to the peripheral component interconnect (PCI) or PCIe on the motherboard and provide ports for speakers, microphones, gaming controllers and CD players. External models plug into a USB port on the machine and provide 3.5mm input and output and coaxial and optical Sony/Phillips digital interface (S/PDIF) connections. Both internal and external audio cards convert the computer language into audible sounds. For those who want to hear the nuances of their movies, videos and games, these cards provide additional capabilities and include the ability to record sound and use external speakers and audio systems.

Adding a Sound Blaster or similar expansion card helps boost your existing computer or audio system setup. TV cards send signals from set-top boxes to speaker systems for enhanced sound when watching shows and movies. Gaming cards help improve background and in-game noises so players hear more of what is going on around them. Look for cards that include ports for microphones and other input devices and add or remove sounds during video editing sessions. Add a simple sound card to existing computer setups and improve system and general music and video audio.

Sound cards come with different specs and features that enhance audio for production and other professional recordings. Pair models with 7.1 channels with compatible speaker systems for full audio that maximizes the extra channels. Options with higher signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) help ensure that the sound produced is higher than the background noise from hardware. Card SNRs range from 80 to 130dB, with higher decibels providing sharper sound. Look for audio cards with low total harmonic distortion (THD) ratings for clear sound that has less noticeable clipping and intermodulation. Cards with higher sample rates send more data over time, resulting in increased audio quality. Add compatible decoders, controllers and other sound card accessories for additional audio modulation and manipulation. Pair Sound Blaster and similar models with add-on cards that boost graphics and system performance for enhanced video quality.

External USB sound cards connect to your existing computer and provide additional ports and jacks for adding speakers and other components. Models with 3.5mm output jacks let you connect headphones and simple speakers for solo listening. A 3.5mm input jack provides space for microphones when creating voice overs and presentations. Some USB sound cards include noise reduction chips that help send clearer sound to external speaker and surround-sound systems. Look for devices that let you control treble and bass for personalized sound. Control knobs for microphone and music volumes assist with balanced recordings. External cards with monitor and echo volume controls let users control the sound coming through the speakers and headphones. Many USB cards help reduce popping, static and crackling from original recordings for high-quality sound through the speakers.

Well guys, i tired of it try it do my AC'97 sound card works on OS X x86, so i buyed a off-board sound card C-Media 8738 5.1 , following a suggestion of a friend from here the of forum, and unfortunately i re-install my system and i not get none sound, it continue not works. Please will be than i buyed a sound card than not works in the x86 system? Please if someone know some information about this help me.

ok.. bad news I am afraid.. that driver works perfect with the card that is not 5.1... if your card has the extra output for more than 2 speakers to be hooked up no one has eve developed a driver for that card. you will want to find the card that has just the 2 channel outputs. In my sound it says my sound card is: CMI8738-v37. this card is perfect. this page shows what one looks like.. =541966 That is the card I have to a tee.. if I remember the discussion when I got mine I was told the other one doesnt work. I am sure if someone were to work on that driver they could get it to work. Sorry guys..
